Menopause

Menopause, that dreaded word that most middle age women fear.  Many women suffer from somewhat debilitating symptoms such as: hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, heavy bleeding, cramping, low libido, and weight gain.  While there is no cure for menopausal symptoms there are several alternative methods (beyond the standard hormone treatments) that can significantly reduce these symptoms.

ABC news recently did a story on a study that produced dramatic results for menopausal women who received twice weekly acupuncture treatments for 10 weeks.

Acupuncture helps to create balance in the body so that it can better handle the decreasing hormones and cope more elegantly with the symptoms brought on by menopause.

There are also several Chinese herbal formulas that be used in conjunction with acupuncture to help produce a stronger effect on the body.  Remember it is always a good idea to consult with a Acupuncturist or Herbalist before starting any of these products.

Free and Easy Wanderer (Xiao Yao Wan) is a wonderful supplement if mood swings and painful periods are taking over your life.  I typically recommend that patients take this supplement twice a day for up three months to help decrease symptoms.  Once the symptoms are under control the patient can take the formula as needed to keep mood swings at bay.

If weight gain is becoming a problem as your metabolism slows down there are two formulas that boost metabolism and stimulate weight loss.  Neither of these supplements have stimulants or dieturetics as ingredients.  You will notice a natural boost in energy without the caffiene crash.  There may be a noticable increase in urination in the first couple days this is due the herbs gently detoxing your body.

Herbalite is a supplement that is taken 2-3 times a day to strongly boost the metabolism and give you more energy to get through the day.  This formula also helps cut carb and sugar cravings.  When combined with a healthy diet and light exercise (30 min 4xweek) patients will see faster results and keep the weight off.

If you do not like to take pills Bojenmi Tea is a great alternative.  It provides the drinker with a boost of energy and is a fabulous metabolism booster.  This tea can be sipped on all day long to cut cravings and reduce appetite.  This tea also hydrates the skin so you may notice fewer wrinkles and more nourished skin with regular use!

As for treating the two most common symptoms of menopause- Hot Flashes and Night Sweats there is hope!  Eight Flavored Rehmannia (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan) comes in liquid and pill form and can help to keep those hot flashes and night sweats under control.  This formula helps the body naturally balance and cope with decreasing hormones triggered by menopause. Most patient notice a decrease in these symptoms with a month of starting these herbs.  I usually recommend that the patient stay on these herbs for 3-4 months and then take as needed for matenence.

Remember studies have shown that a good healthy diet, sleep and regular exercise also help to minimize the effects of menopause and make a more enjoyable transition.
